Logo vs Brand Identity: What Does Your Business Actually Need?
A logo is one mark. A brand identity is the whole system around it. Here is how to tell which one your business needs, and when to start with a logo.
Table of contents
If you are starting or growing a business, you have probably asked a designer for “a logo” and then heard the word “brand identity” in the same conversation. They sound similar, but they are not the same thing, and they do not cost the same. Choosing the wrong one means either paying for work you do not need yet or being stuck with a logo that looks different on every surface.
The short answer: a logo is one mark. A brand identity is the whole system around it: colours, fonts, layouts and rules for how everything looks together. Most small businesses can start with a logo. A business that sells in many places needs an identity.
What a logo is
A logo is the symbol or wordmark that represents your business. It is the thing on your sign, your website header and your social profile picture. A good logo is simple, readable at small sizes and works in one colour as well as full colour.
A logo project usually gives you:
The main logo and a few layout versions (horizontal, stacked, icon only)
Colour and black-and-white versions
Files for print and screen, such as PNG, SVG and PDF
What a brand identity is
A brand identity starts with the logo and then decides everything that surrounds it. It answers questions like: which colours do we always use, which fonts do we write in, how do we lay out a flyer, and how does a business card relate to a delivery van?
A brand identity typically adds:
A defined colour palette with exact colour codes
Typography: one heading font and one body font, with sizes
Logo rules: spacing, minimum size and what not to do
Applications: business cards, stationery, social media, packaging, signage or uniforms
A short brand guide so anyone who works with you can stay consistent
When a logo is enough
You are just starting and want to look professional quickly
You sell in one or two places, for example a website and an Instagram page
Your budget is tight and you want to invest in the business first
You are not sure yet what the business will become
A clean logo is a good start. You can always build the identity around it later, as long as the logo was designed with that in mind.
When you need a brand identity
Customers meet you in many places: shop, packaging, vehicles, social media, presentations
More than one person creates your material, and it starts to look inconsistent
You are launching a product, opening a new location or entering a new market
You want to charge more, and you want to look like a business that deserves it
A hospitality or food brand is a typical example. The logo goes on the shop sign, but it also has to work on a paper bag, a cap, a delivery van and a social post. Without shared colours, fonts and rules, each of those ends up looking like it came from a different company. The same is true for a contractor or service business, where a logo must sit on hard hats, vehicle wraps, site signs and business cards. You can see projects like this in our portfolio.
A simple way to decide
Ask yourself three questions:
Where will people see my brand? One or two places points to a logo. Many places points to an identity.
Who will make my designs later? If several people will, you need rules they can follow.
What is my next 12 months? If you are growing, opening or launching, build the identity now instead of redoing the logo later.
Our suggestion: if you are unsure, start with the logo, and ask for a design that can grow into an identity. If you already know you will sell across several channels, go straight to a brand identity. It is usually cheaper than buying a logo first and the extra pieces separately.
